Zelensky Albania Summit

TIRANA, Albania — Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky arrived in Tirana on May 16 to participate in the sixth meeting of the European Political Community. The summit aims to address security issues in Europe, particularly focusing on Russia’s ongoing aggression against Ukraine, according to presidential spokesperson Serhii Nykyforov.

The summit occurs as delegations from Ukraine and Russia prepare for talks in Istanbul, marking their first meeting since 2022. Turkish and U.S. officials are expected to join these crucial discussions.

Zelensky’s visit follows a recent meeting in Turkey with President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. Before leaving Ankara, Zelensky expressed gratitude towards Erdogan for recognizing Crimea as Ukrainian territory, describing it as a significant political endorsement.

While a direct meeting between Zelensky and Russian President Vladimir Putin was anticipated in Istanbul, Putin instead delegated discussions to his aide, Vladimir Medinsky. Kyiv has urged Moscow to agree to an unconditional 30-day ceasefire as a prerequisite for broader peace negotiations, a proposal that Russia has consistently rejected.

On social media, Zelensky reiterated the importance of international support in facing challenges posed by Russia. In his words, “This war must end, and we are making every effort to ensure that it does.”

As tensions remain high, the success of the summit may prove pivotal for both Ukraine and the broader European community.
