Zohran Mamdani Wins New York City Mayoral Election
NEW YORK, NY — Zohran Mamdani has been projected as the next mayor of New York City, defeating former governor Andrew Cuomo and Republican candidate Curtis Sliwa in a competitive election on November 3, 2025.
Mamdani, a Democratic nominee and state assemblyman, garnered more than 50% of the vote within the first hour of polls closing, marking a historic victory as the first Muslim mayor of the city and the youngest to hold the office in over a century.
The 34-year-old democratic socialist campaigned on a platform for working-class New Yorkers, proposing initiatives such as free public transportation, no-cost childcare, and a rent freeze. His win comes despite facing substantial financial backing against him from billionaires who supported his opponents.
“The billionaire class has sought to convince those making $30 an hour that their enemies are those earning $20 an hour,” Mamdani said in his victory speech, indicating a shift in the narrative for many working-class citizens.
Cuomo, who received endorsements from notable figures like former President Donald Trump and Elon Musk, failed to secure enough votes, finishing with 41.4%. Sliwa received 7.7% of the votes.
Mamdani’s lead reportedly included over a million votes, a feat not accomplished since John Lindsay in the late 1960s. His campaign focused on unifying various demographic groups in the city, emphasizing the need for a government that supports all residents.
As the mayor-elect, Mamdani has expressed a willingness to work with the city’s business community while also pushing forward his initiatives aimed at reducing economic inequality. This includes plans to raise the corporate tax rate and increase taxes on millionaires, a proposal met with concern by some business leaders.
During the election, Mamdani’s vision of a city that caters to everyone resonated particularly with younger voters, who appreciated his focus on equity and accessibility. Early indications show that Mamdani might bring fresh ideas to the often complex political landscape of New York City.
As he prepares to take office, Mamdani faces expectations to maintain the balance between progressive policies and the economic realities of the city.
