A massive fire broke out in Richmond, engulfing the historic Marpole rail bridge near the Fraser River. The blaze, which started in an industrial building on River Road, quickly spread to the decommissioned bridge, sending thick plumes of black smoke across the skyline.

Witnesses in Vancouver and as far as North Vancouver reported seeing the smoke from the fire, which forced the closure of the Oak Street bridge in both directions as firefighters battled the intense flames. The old CP rail swing bridge, coated in flammable and toxic creosote, became a blazing inferno at its south end.

The River Rock Casino and Hotel, located adjacent to the fire, remained operational as emergency responders worked to contain the fire. Despite the proximity of the blaze, travel operations at the Vancouver International Airport were not disrupted.

Local authorities, including DriveBC and E-Comm 9-1-1, issued traffic advisories and warnings to the public to avoid the area and not to call emergency services unless necessary. The burned property on River Road, identified as belonging to River Point Yacht & Marina Centre Ltd, sustained significant damage in the fire.
