X Social Media Outage

San Francisco, CA — Many users of X, the social media platform formerly known as Twitter, faced serious outages on Friday, May 30, 2025. Thousands reported disruptions that included disappearing feeds and halted posting capabilities. Users encountered a message on their home screens stating, “Welcome to X! This is the best place to see what’s happening in your world. Find some people and topics to follow now.”

As of 4:21 p.m. ET, over 34,000 users had reported problems to Downdetector, a website that monitors outages. The issues began around 4 p.m. ET, with the X Developer Platform stating on its status page that there was a “site-wide outage” affecting several core functions.

The outage coincided with a visit from Elon Musk, the owner of X, to the White House, where he attended a press conference held by President Trump. During the event, Trump thanked Musk for his contributions in managing the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE).

Users on Downdetector expressed their frustration with the service disruptions. One user commented, “Twitter (X) was down most of the day yesterday, and it’s down again today, what’s going on?”

X has encountered multiple outages since Musk acquired the platform in 2022 for $44 billion. In recent days alone, the platform faced additional difficulties, including a data center outage. Many users fear that these continuous issues may lead to a decline in user engagement and trust.

Despite efforts to maintain service, figures from a report in April indicated a significant loss of users in Europe, with X shedding 11 million users since August 2024. The highest numbers of users leaving are from France, Poland, and Germany.

The platform’s repeated outage incidents raise concerns about its operational reliability, while also attracting criticism regarding its handling of misinformation and political bias.
