Robert Eggers Adapting Dickens’ ‘A Christmas Carol’ with Willem Dafoe

Los Angeles, CA – Director Robert Eggers is set to adapt Charles Dickens‘ classic tale, ‘A Christmas Carol,’ with production expected to begin soon. The filmmaker, known for his unique take on horror with projects like ‘Nosferatu,’ plans to write and direct the retelling of the iconic Christmas ghost story.
Sources confirmed that while casting negotiations are still in the early stages, Eggers is writing the role of Ebenezer Scrooge specifically for his frequent collaborator, actor Willem Dafoe. This adaptation is anticipated to reflect Eggers’ distinctive visual style, which often incorporates supernatural elements and rich historical detail.
‘A Christmas Carol’ has been adapted in numerous forms since its publication in 1843, featuring tales of Scrooge, a miser who encounters the ghost of his former business partner, Jacob Marley, and the spirits of Christmas Past, Present, and Yet to Come. The story has a well-established dark tone, making it a fitting choice for Eggers.
Eggers’ recent film, ‘Nosferatu,’ has been a significant success, grossing over $181 million worldwide and receiving praise for its stylistic elements and craftsmanship. Following ‘A Christmas Carol,’ Eggers is also slated to direct another project titled ‘Werwulf,’ set in 13th-century England.
Producers for the upcoming adaptation include Chris Columbus and Elenor Columbus through their company, Maiden Voyage, alongside Eggers himself. As the project progresses, further details about casting and filming schedules are expected to be released.
