Severe Thunderstorm Watch Issued for Chicago Area Amid Heat Wave
CHICAGO, IL – A Severe Thunderstorm Watch is in effect for much of the Chicago area, valid until 7 p.m. Saturday, according to the National Weather Service (NWS). The watch covers Cook, DeKalb, DuPage, Kane, Kendall, Lake, McHenry, and Will counties.
Severe Thunderstorm Warnings have been issued for various locations, including Aurora, Saint Charles, and Batavia until 5:15 p.m. Earlier warnings were applied to Arlington Heights, Schaumburg, and Hoffman Estates, with additional alerts affecting Belvidere, Crystal Lake, and several other communities.
Forecasts predict high temperatures in the 90s, with “feels like” temperatures surging above 100 degrees in some areas, especially south of Interstate 80. This excessive heat is classified as an Elevated Excessive Heat Risk by the NWS.
“We could see damaging winds reaching 60 to 70 mph,” NBC 5 Storm Team Meteorologist Kevin Jeanes said. “Heavy rainfall is also expected, but widespread flash flooding isn’t predicted.”
As storms approach, residents may experience torrential rain, gusty winds, and potential localized flooding. The NWS noted areas like Mokena have already reported 3.4 inches of rain, raising concerns over further flooding.
Following Saturday’s storms, meteorologists expect lower temperatures with highs around 80 degrees on Sunday. However, the heat is expected to return on Monday with more thunderstorms possible.
Officals urge caution on the roads during storms and advise residents to stay informed through multiple weather warning systems.
