NFL Teams Face Roster Cuts Ahead of Regular Season

MIAMI GARDENS, Florida — The NFL’s deadline for teams to reduce their rosters from 90 players to 53 is set for Tuesday at 4 p.m. Eastern time. As teams finalize their cuts, the Miami Dolphins are focused on shaping their roster for the upcoming season.

Each NFL team is required to submit its initial roster by the deadline, which allows them to also prepare a 16-man practice squad. Changes may occur in the following week as teams claim players off waivers or sign free agents. The Dolphins, in particular, aim to build a competitive squad as they approach the start of the season.

The Dolphins have an exemption for offensive lineman Bayron Matos through the International Player Pathway program, allowing them to carry 91 players. Liam Eichenberg, on the physically unable to perform list, still counts against the roster limit despite not practicing.

This offseason, the Dolphins targeted physicality at the line of scrimmage, drafting four players over 300 pounds. Additionally, they are fostering a new team culture by parting ways with players viewed as less committed to the team’s goals.

As the Dolphins prepare for final cuts, there are notable improvements in various positions. The quarterback situation shows promise, with Quinn Ewers gaining traction as a strong backup option behind Tua Tagovailoa.

In the running back group, De'Von Achane‘s status is uncertain due to a calf injury, while Mike Boone‘s stock has risen following a solid preseason. The wide receiver lineup, highlighted by Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle, remains a focal point, although Hill’s injuries have limited his participation.

On defense, the Dolphins’ secondary sees a complete overhaul from last year, and recent signings like Matthew Judon aim to strengthen their pass rush. As they finalize their roster, Grier and head coach Mike McDaniel are making strategic decisions to enhance overall team performance.

The Dolphins’ roster cuts will be closely watched as players like Darren Waller and several rookies contend for spots on the active roster.
