Mazatlán Heavy Rain Flooding

MAZATLÁN, Mexico — Heavy rain early Wednesday caused flooding in Mazatlán, forcing water into homes and closing several roads. The city’s main creek overflowed, leading to significant disruptions.

Oscar Tirado, the local Civil Protection coordinator, explained that the rain was caused by moisture flows, a low-pressure system, and the Mexican monsoon. The downpour began in the pre-dawn hours, with streets shut down due to the flooding.

The Jabalíes Creek overflowed in the Jacarandas neighborhood, where several weeks ago, the governor had visited to provide aid to residents. The water reached up to one meter high in some homes.

Roads throughout the city were affected, with major avenues like Camarón Sábalo, a popular tourist area, being completely flooded. Crews were already working on a stormwater collector in the area, which exacerbated the flooding.

On the highway towards El Recodo, the creek also overflowed, blocking access to that community. Residents had to use the rural route through La Noria or wait for water levels to recede.

According to the National Water Commission (CONAGUA), the highest rainfall was recorded in the rural community of Siqueros in Mazatlán, measuring 83 millimeters.
