Breanna Stewart to Play Despite Knee Injury in Game 2
NEW YORK — New York Liberty forward Breanna Stewart announced plans to play in Game 2 against the Phoenix Mercury on Wednesday, despite suffering a left MCL sprain in the series opener.
Stewart, who was seen wearing a leg sleeve on her knee during practice, did not participate in Tuesday’s practice but joined the team for a shootaround on Wednesday morning. She stated that she would assess her condition before finalizing her status for the game.
The Liberty lead the first-round playoff series 1-0 after winning Game 1, 76-69, in overtime. “We want to finish it here,” Stewart said, emphasizing the importance of securing the win at home to avoid another trip to Phoenix.
During Game 1, Stewart sustained her injury while attempting a layup with just over three minutes left in overtime. After making the basket and sustaining a foul, she grimaced after landing and immediately grabbed her left knee. Though she remained in the game for a short time, she soon requested to be substituted due to discomfort.
<p"What I felt in that moment scared me more than anything," Stewart said following the incident. An MRI conducted the next day revealed that structurally her knee was sound, allowing her to potentially continue playing.
Stewart’s presence is crucial for the Liberty, as she is leading the team with an average of 18.3 points, 6.6 rebounds, and 1.4 blocks per game this season. Despite suffering from a right knee bone bruise earlier in the year, she has shown resilience and determination, willing to risk reinjury for her team.
“(Stewart is) a tough motherf—er,” said Liberty guard Natasha Cloud, highlighting the admiration for Stewart’s toughness.
Mercury coach Nate Tibbetts mentioned that the team is preparing as if Stewart will indeed play. If the Liberty win tonight, they will advance to the next round, but a loss could mean a deciding Game 3 back in Phoenix this Friday.
Liberty coach Sandy Brondello noted the need for her team to be ready for a hungry Mercury squad as they prepare for the crucial matchup.
