Danny Boyle 28 Years Later Movie

HOLY ISLAND, England — Filmmaker Danny Boyle has returned to the zombie genre with his latest film, 28 Years Later, now streaming on Netflix after its theatrical release in June 2025. This third installment in the popular series follows the events of 28 Days Later (2002) and 28 Weeks Later (2007).

The story picks up decades after the initial outbreak of the Rage Virus, which devastated Great Britain and much of Europe. The film centers on a small group of survivors living on Holy Island, led by Jamie, portrayed by Aaron Taylor-Johnson, and his young son, Spike, played by newcomer Alfie Williams. Jamie’s wife, Isla, is also among the group, portrayed by Jodie Comer.

In 28 Years Later, Jamie prepares Spike for his first encounter with the infected, marking a rite of passage in their isolated community. The film explores their struggle against the backdrop of a zombie-infested world.

“The more you kill, the easier it gets,” Jamie teaches Spike, as they face the challenges of survival amidst the chaos.

Boyle reunites with writer Alex Garland, who also penned the screenplay. Their collaboration aims to blend horror with poignant human experiences, providing depth to their characters. The visuals combine new technology, as iPhones are used to capture the gritty atmosphere, creating a hyperreal experience.

Garland’s writing introduces complex character dynamics, particularly between Spike and his parents. The film balances grotesque horror with emotional depth, achieving a unique tone that sets it apart from typical zombie films.

Initially met with critical acclaim, 28 Years Later has earned an impressive 89% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. The film grossed over $150 million at the box office, indicating strong audience demand for the franchise. Following its success, a fourth installment, 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple, is scheduled for a January 2026 release, featuring returning actors including Cillian Murphy.
