Severe Thunderstorm Warning Issued for Cal-Nev-Ari Area

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. (AP) — The National Weather Service issued a severe thunderstorm warning for San Bernardino and Clark counties on Friday at 2:53 p.m. The warning remains in effect until 3:15 p.m. and is expected to bring wind gusts of up to 60 mph and quarter-sized hail.
At 2:52 p.m., a severe thunderstorm was located seven miles west of Cal-Nev-Ari, which is 16 miles south of Searchlight. The storm is moving west at a speed of 5 mph, according to the NWS.
“Hail damage to vehicles is expected,” the NWS stated. “Expect wind damage to roofs and trees.” A public report has confirmed the presence of a landspout.
Residents are advised to move to an interior room on the lowest floor of a building for safety. For updates on road closures, people can use the NWS mobile app or call 800-427-7623.
Emergency alerts regarding “considerable or catastrophic” hazards will be sent to all mobile phones in the area. To stay informed about lesser risks, residents can sign up for county alert systems and follow local agencies on social media.
If flooding is a risk, sandbags are recommended for protection. County fire departments often provide a limited supply of free sandbags, but residents should bring their own shovels to fill them and provide proof of residency.
When facing thunderstorms, safety measures are crucial. The NWS advises shelter indoors and urges individuals outside with no access to shelter to seek safety as soon as possible.
In the event of heavy rain, the risk of flooding increases, and drivers should exercise caution. This includes maintaining safe distances, driving slowly, and avoiding flooded areas.
Overall, taking preventive measures during inclement weather can significantly enhance personal safety. Residents are encouraged to stay vigilant and heed all local safety advisories.
