Chris Swanson Michigan Governor Campaign

SWANSON MARQUETTE, Mich. — Genesee County Sheriff Chris Swanson has announced his candidacy for Michigan‘s governorship, marking his first campaign for statewide office.

Swanson, a Flint suburb native with over 30 years in law enforcement, gained national recognition in 2020 for marching alongside peaceful protesters after the murder of George Floyd. He is the founder of the Genesee Human Oppression Strike Team, aimed at combating human trafficking, and a contributor to the IGNITE program, which provides education and job training for inmates.

In discussing his motives for running, Swanson emphasized the importance of leadership. “When you get an opportunity to do a greater good and the timing is right, it makes the most sense. That’s what I think leadership is,” he said. Swanson believes his experience as Sheriff gives him a unique crossover appeal to voters across party lines.

He referenced Marquette County Sheriff Greg Zyburt as a leader who connects with people, stating, “He takes care of people and he doesn’t ask questions,” which he aims to emulate as governor.

Swanson outlined his campaign strategy, focusing on unity among Democrats competing for the nomination. He commented, “I’m friends with both of them… We cannot attack each other… My messaging is different too,” referencing his large social media presence as a key to connecting with voters.

As he considers issues to address, Swanson draws on his paramedic experience, stating, “You have to triage what is the most serious down to the least.” He identified public safety, education, and economic stability as priorities for his potential administration.

Swanson plans to implement initiatives that address pressing issues, including protecting vulnerable populations and enhancing literacy through innovative educational programs. He believes a strong economy will come from producing more goods and reducing business taxes.

Concerning his campaign messages, Swanson urges voters to support him not only for his political stance but for his record of service. “Believe in somebody who has the heart to serve, not just the party,” he said, stressing the importance of unity. He aims to inspire voters by encouraging them to judge him based on his actions as sheriff, not by broader political trends.

Swanson expressed optimism about the potential for crossover appeal, saying, “I’m the one candidate that can do it with the crossover appeal from Republicans, as much as I have my Democratic support.” He envisions bringing hope to Michigan residents, highlighting the character and work ethic of towns like Marquette.
