Edu Manga, Palmeiras Star from the ’80s, Dies at 58

Barueri, Brazil — Eduardo Antônio dos Santos, known as Edu Manga, died on Friday, October 3, 2025, at the age of 58. The former midfielder, a prominent figure in Palmeiras‘ history during the 1980s, was hospitalized in Barueri for renal issues when he passed away, a fact confirmed by the club’s official social media.
“With deep sadness, we received the news of the passing of Eduardo Antônio dos Santos, our eternal Edu Manga. Rest in peace, star!” read the club’s statement. The fans remember Edu Manga as an idol of Palmeiras, where he played from 1985 to 1989.
Born in Osasco on February 2, 1967, Edu Manga joined the Palmeiras academy and quickly rose to the professional squad. In his four years at the club, he played 188 matches and scored 44 goals. His skills as a playmaker and ability to evade defenders secured his place in the hearts of fans.
Edu was also briefly called up to the Brazilian national team, where he played 10 matches between 1987 and 1989. His nickname, ‘Manga,’ was given by his teammate Denys, who thought his haircut resembled that of a mangled mango.
After leaving Palmeiras, he had a noteworthy career, playing for several clubs including Corinthians, where he had a short stint after Palmeiras, and the Mexican club América. In his time at América, he scored 37 goals in 50 appearances and won the 1990 CONCACAF Champions Cup.
Edu also played internationally for teams like Shimizu S-Pulse in Japan, Emelec in Ecuador, and Real Valladolid in Spain. In Brazil, he additionally represented Athletico Paranaense, Rio Branco-SP, Sport Recife, Remo, Náutico, and Figueirense, where he retired in 2002.
His impact on Brazilian football is remembered fondly, and he leaves behind a legacy of skill and passion for the game.
