Historic Gaza Ceasefire Deal Reached Amid Hostage Releases

SHARM EL-SHEIKH, Egypt — A historic ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas was solidified on Monday, marked by the release of the last 20 living Israeli hostages and more than 1,900 Palestinian prisoners. The U.S.-brokered deal comes after two years of devastating conflict in Gaza, culminating in emotional scenes as former captives reunited with their families.
U.S. President Donald Trump attended the summit in Egypt, where he praised the agreement as a critical step towards lasting peace in the region. ‘Today is a big day, and we made history,’ he declared during his remarks, also highlighting the humanitarian aid surge into Gaza.
In the capital of Israel, Tel Aviv, approximately 65,000 people gathered at Hostages Square, expressing relief and hope as helicopters delivered freed hostages. Emotional reunions took place as many families celebrated the return of loved ones from captivity.
In a related context, the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) called for greater media access to Gaza, urging coverage on the plight of the more than 1,700 Palestinian detainees reportedly held without charge.
The summit also saw British Education Secretary Bridget Phillipson claim the U.K. played a pivotal role in shaping the ceasefire terms, a statement that drew backlash from U.S. officials. Meanwhile, Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar dismissed Phillipson’s assertion, reinforcing Israel’s strong stance on the peace plan.
Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) welcomed the breakthrough but emphasized the need for humanitarian support, urging for Palestinians to take the lead in reconstruction efforts. He reiterated calls for a two-state solution amidst concerns over U.S. military support for Israel.
With the completion of the hostage exchange, attention has turned to the reconstruction of Gaza, which is anticipated to face numerous challenges. The United Kingdom has initiated discussions on facilitating aid and restoration efforts, indicating a commitment to ensuring Palestinian-led rebuilding.
As the summit progressed, Trump emphasized a renewed focus on stability in Gaza, urging regional cooperation. He noted that the success of the agreement could shift perspectives in the Middle East, potentially fostering new diplomatic relations.
Going forward, the key focus will be on the disarmament of Hamas and the full implementation of ceasefire terms. Trump’s administration remains optimistic about the potential for a sustained peace in a region long fraught with conflict.
