Netflix Expands Catan Universe with New Adaptation Partnership
LOS GATOS, Calif. — Netflix has announced a groundbreaking partnership with Asmodee, a leader in tabletop gaming, to develop a variety of screen projects based on the beloved board game Catan.
This collaboration marks the first time that the game, originally known as The Settlers of Catan and created by Klaus Teuber in 1995, will be adapted for screen, encompassing both scripted and unscripted content.
The game has sold over 45 million copies worldwide and has been translated into more than 40 languages, capturing the imagination of players across generations. Players navigate a fictional island to build settlements and trade resources while facing challenges.
“Millions of people have been enjoying Catan since it was created, and for many it remains a gateway to modern board gaming,” said Thomas Koegler, CEO of Asmodee. “I’m thrilled to see the game expanding to a larger audience who will discover the richness of its universe.”
The production team includes Darren Kyman from Asmodee, Pete Fenlon from Catan Studio, and Klaus Teuber’s sons, Guido and Benjamin Teuber. Roy Lee of Vertigo Entertainment is also onboard as a producer.
Jinny Howe, head of scripted series for Netflix in the U.S. and Canada, highlighted the strategic depth of the game. “Anyone who has played Catan knows that the intense strategy and negotiation at the core of the game has endless opportunities for serious drama,” Howe said. “We’re excited to show Asmodee the full potential of Netflix when we work together.”
The Catan adaptation will join a growing list of game-inspired projects on Netflix, including Magic: The Gathering and the award-winning series Arcane.
The Teuber brothers expressed their enthusiasm about the collaboration, stating, “This partnership with Netflix marks an exciting new chapter in that journey. For three decades, Catan has connected families and friends around the world, and we are thrilled to see it inspire storytelling on a global stage.”
