Belo Horizonte, Brazil – Atlético Mineiro and Lanús will host the decisive second legs of their Copa Sudamericana semifinals this week after drawing their first matches.

Atlético Mineiro, managed by Jorge Sampaoli, managed a dramatic 1-1 draw against Independiente del Valle last Tuesday in Quito, Ecuador. Dudu scored the equalizer in stoppage time, keeping the Brazilian team in contention for their first Sudamericana title.

Lanús also faced challenges in their first match against Universidad de Chile. Despite taking a 2-0 lead, they settled for a 2-2 draw after conceding two late goals, including an equalizer from Charles Aránguiz from the penalty spot at the 90+9 minute.

The second legs will take place on Tuesday in Belo Horizonte and Thursday in Buenos Aires. The two winners will meet in the final on November 22 in Asunción. The champion will not only claim the trophy but will also secure a spot in the group stage of the 2026 Copa Libertadores and the next year’s Recopa Sudamericana.

Atlético Mineiro is currently 13th in the Brazilian league and aims to win the Sudamericana to salvage their season. Sampaoli emphasized the need for balance against a strong Independiente del Valle team, who are the reigning champions of the Sudamericana.

Junior Sornoza initially put Independiente del Valle ahead with a penalty in the first leg, but Hulk‘s assistance to Dudu secured the draw. On their side, Independiente del Valle, who have a reputation as a formidable visitor, will strive to clinch a place in the finals.

Meanwhile, Lanús coach Mauricio Pellegrino highlighted the importance of their home advantage in the returning match against Universidad de Chile. Lanús, the 2013 Sudamericana champions, looks to capitalize on their strong start.

Both matches promise to deliver high-stakes football as these teams seek to make their mark in South American football.
