James Talarico Raises $6 Million in Senate Bid, Outpacing Rivals in Texas
AUSTIN, Texas — State Rep. James Talarico, a Democrat from Austin, has raised $6 million in just three weeks for his U.S. Senate campaign, significantly exceeding his closest rival, former U.S. Rep. Colin Allred, who garnered $4 million over three months.
Talarico’s campaign centers on a message aimed at combating what he calls “billionaire mega-donors and their puppet politicians.” Political analyst Matt Angle of the Lone Star Project applauded Talarico’s strategy, noting that many Democrats overlook the importance of appealing to middle-class voters. “Democrats took for granted that the middle class and working Texans understood it’s Democrats doing the heavy lifting for them,” said Angle.
However, Talarico’s fundraising raises eyebrows, as he reportedly accepted over $90,000 from billionaire donors in September. Despite promising not to accept corporate PAC money during his campaign, his financial sources include notable billionaires. Talarico’s spokesperson, JT Ennis, defended this approach: “James is upfront with anyone who donates. They are supporting a movement to take power back for working people in a system rigged by billionaire mega-donors.”
Political scientists emphasize that Talarico’s campaign conveys a populist message, essential for winning in Texas. Brian Smith, a professor at St. Edward’s University, pointed out the balance Talarico must maintain: “He needs traditional Democratic voters while converting independents who are anti-DC or anti-Austin.”
Allred also committed to rejecting corporate PAC money but does not emphasize the anti-billionaire sentiment to the degree Talarico does. Dan Gottlieb, communications director for Allred’s campaign, said, “Colin’s campaign is powered by Texans—not special interests.”
The race for the Senate seat remains highly competitive, with both candidates striving to distinguish their messages and fundraising strategies.
