X Launches Encrypted Chat to Compete with Leading Messaging Apps
San Francisco, CA – X, the platform formerly known as Twitter, launched its new Chat feature on November 14, 2025, aiming to transform its direct messaging system into a more secure communication hub. The update, which introduces end-to-end encryption, has begun rolling out to iOS and web users, with Android support expected soon.
Chat replaces the older messaging system, bringing enhanced capabilities such as video and voice calls, disappearing messages, and the ability to edit or delete sent messages. This upgrade was long-awaited, particularly after X suspended its previous encrypted DM service earlier this year for improvements.
Elon Musk, X’s owner, envisions this service as a key part of his broader ambition to create an ‘everything app’ that integrates social media, communications, and financial services. “Our goal is to provide the least insecure messaging system available,” Musk stated at the launch event.
However, some experts express skepticism about the security of this new system. While X claims to offer improved privacy features, critics note that metadata, such as message timestamps and sender identities, remain accessible to the platform. No verification system is in place as of yet to ensure conversations aren’t intercepted.
The ability to block screenshots and receive alerts when someone attempts to capture a screen adds a layer of privacy, addressing concerns users have raised about security. “Chat seems designed to attract users disillusioned with current messaging platforms, highlighting zero data profiling,” said industry expert Linda Yaccarino.
Industry insiders anticipate that Chat will face significant competition from established players like WhatsApp and Signal, both known for their robust encryption. However, X’s integration with a broader social ecosystem could offer it an edge, allowing users to seamlessly transition from public posts to private conversations.
As X continues its rollout, users are encouraged to explore the new features while keeping safety concerns in mind. Future updates may include enhancements to verification protocols and additional security measures.
