Activist Aisha Yesufu Criticized for Disrespecting National Anthem by APC Chieftain
A prominent member of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Joe Igbokwe, has criticized activist Aisha Yesufu for her perceived disrespectful behavior towards the new national anthem, Nigeria.
Yesufu, well-known for her activism and as the co-convener of the BringBackOurGirls advocacy group, chose not to sing the national anthem ‘Nigeria we hail thee’ at an event, instead opting to sit while others stood up to honor the anthem.
In a video shared on social media, Yesufu could be seen sitting during the recitation of the new national anthem and captioned the video with ‘#NotMyNationalAnthem’.
Reacting to this, Joe Igbokwe took to his Facebook page to condemn Yesufu’s behavior as ‘nonsensical’ and warned that her actions may have negative consequences for her and her family.
He wrote, ‘Aisha Yesufu cannot respect the National Anthem. Let us see where all the nonsensical behavior will take her to. She may not understand the damage she is doing to herself and her family. Continue.’
President Tinubu recently signed the National Anthem Bill 2024 into law, reinstating ‘Nigeria we hail thee’ as the national anthem, which has sparked mixed reactions among Nigerians.
