Amazon Launches Alexa+, A Game-Changing AI Assistant

SEATTLE, Wash. — Amazon introduced Alexa+, a revolutionary upgrade of its voice assistant, reflecting significant advancements in generative artificial intelligence (AI). The new assistant promises to enhance user experience by being more conversational and capable, with the ability to assist users in various tasks effortlessly.
“Today, we’re excited to introduce Alexa+, our next-generation assistant powered by generative AI,” said Panos Panay, Senior Vice President of Devices & Services. “Alexa+ helps you get things done, keeping you entertained, organized, and informed while engaging in natural conversations.”
With over 600 million Alexa devices already in homes worldwide, the introduction of Alexa+ marks a major step forward for Amazon in the highly competitive AI assistant market, particularly as rivals like ChatGPT and Google’s Gemini have gained traction.
Alexa+ is designed to manage daily tasks seamlessly, allowing users to book appointments, explore music, order groceries, and even have conversations about complex topics. The assistant utilizes advanced large language models (LLMs) enabled by Amazon Bedrock to deliver responsive, personalized interactions.
One of the standout features of Alexa+ is its ability to remember user preferences across different interactions. For instance, if a user frequently requests vegetarian recipes, Alexa+ can recall this preference and tailor suggestions accordingly.
“With Alexa+, you don’t just interact with a piece of technology; you engage with a helpful companion that remembers your tastes and assists without needing constant guidance,” said Panay.
Alexa+ incorporates a concept called “experts,” groups designed to execute specific tasks efficiently. This facilitates a multi-step approach in assisting users, such as booking a dinner reservation, notifying a friend, and updating a calendar all in one voice command.
Additionally, Alexa+ brings proactive capabilities, alerting users about relevant topics, such as ticket sales for concerts or advising on traffic conditions for their commutes. This shift aims to redefine what users expect from smart assistants.
The new version can also analyze documents and text information to provide additional personalized responses. Users can upload documents such as work calendars or personal notes, allowing Alexa+ to generate contextually aware suggestions.
Amazon plans to roll out Alexa+ in the U.S., starting with Echo Show models 8, 10, 15, and 21, followed by broader availability across the Alexa-enabled ecosystem. Alexa+ will be available at no cost for Amazon Prime members, while non-members will have access for a subscription fee of $19.99 per month.
“We want to ensure our customers enjoy a service that not only increases convenience in their daily lives but also prioritizes privacy and security,” noted Panay, emphasizing that the technology is built on Amazon Web Services’ secure infrastructure.
The initial rollout is anticipated to start within the next few weeks, with Amazon focusing on maximizing user engagement and building on the extensive array of Alexa-controlled devices already in use.
