Illinois health officials are cautioning the public to inspect their solar eclipse glasses following a recall by Amazon over safety concerns. The Illinois Department of Public Health issued a press release noting that certain brands, including the ‘Biniki Solar Eclipse Glasses AAS Approved 2024 – CE & ISO Certified Safe Shades for Direct Sun Viewing (6 packs)’, may not meet the required safety standards.

The potentially faulty eclipse glasses were sold through Amazon and various Illinois retailers. They are believed to lack the critical ISO designation 12312-2, essential for safe viewing of the sun during the eclipse. Individuals in possession of these recalled glasses are advised to refrain from using them to view the upcoming celestial event.

According to the release, Amazon notified customers via email about the recall, with the message urging recipients not to rely on the Biniki glasses for the impending eclipse scheduled for April 8. The company also offered refunds to affected customers to ensure their safety.

Reports from Rochester, New York highlighted Amazon’s proactive communication to purchasers regarding the recall. Amazon recognized the potential oversight in sourcing the glasses from suppliers not approved by the American Astronomical Society (AAS). The company, while emphasizing caution, assured customers of their commitment to safety.

News10NBC reported Amazon’s statement, indicating their swift response to the issue. The company expressed regret for any inconvenience caused to customers and clarified that the recall was a precautionary measure taken to prioritize consumer well-being.
