Arizona State Kicker Secures Last-Minute Win Over Baylor

TEMPE, Ariz. — Arizona State University’s football team escaped their Big 12 opener with a thrilling 27-24 victory over Baylor on Saturday, yet they remain outside The Associated Press’ Top 25 Poll. The Sun Devils received 30 votes, marking a comeback after their unranked status following a loss to Mississippi State earlier this season.
In a game defined by late drama, senior kicker Jesus Gomez nailed a 43-yard field goal as time expired. “It was just like another kick,” Gomez said. “I’ve done this many, many times, and I trust the whole operation.” With this successful kick, he not only showcased his consistency but also rallied the Sun Devils to their seventh straight conference win dating back to last season.
Gomez, who transferred from Eastern Michigan, has been a standout for ASU, demonstrating resilience under pressure. Last year, he secured a win for Eastern Michigan against ASU, but now, he is savoring his newfound success with his current team.
During the game against Baylor, Arizona State’s defense played a pivotal role by forcing two turnovers in the second half. However, the offense struggled initially, requiring Gomez to step in when drives failed to produce touchdowns. “It’s a team effort,” he added, referencing the support he received from teammates.
Kenny Dillingham, ASU’s head coach, expressed his trust in Gomez, stating, “He’s calm and confident.” Gomez’s steady performance comes amid the Sun Devils’ ongoing efforts to re-establish a reliable kicking game, which has faced challenges since Zane Gonzalez left ASU in 2016.
The Sun Devils will next play at Mountain America Stadium against the No. 23 TCU Horned Frogs on Friday. TCU is coming off a strong win against SMU, making for a challenging matchup.
As Arizona State looks to improve its standing and potentially break back into the rankings, Gomez’s performance is pivotal for the team’s success this season.
