UK Army Chief Calls for Preparedness Against Russian Threat Amid Decreasing Army Numbers

The head of the UK army has urged citizens to be prepared for a potential major war with Russia. Gen Sir Patrick Sanders emphasized the need for the British public to reinforce the shrinking military in the face of an increasingly aggressive Putin regime. Although the Ministry of Defence clarified that it did not advocate a return to peacetime conscription, Sanders encouraged the UK to consider Sweden‘s approach to national mobilization. He stated that ordinary people would have to join the army to counter the looming threat. Sanders highlighted the efficacy of citizen armies based on Ukraine‘s example.

With army numbers at their lowest in over 300 years and ongoing tensions between the army and the Ministry of Defence regarding future spending, Sanders expressed concerns about the decreasing military capabilities. He referred to the end of the cold war peace dividend, which has resulted in a 50% reduction in army size over the past three decades and a 28% reduction in the last 12 years. While acknowledging recruitment challenges, including the highest number of applications in six years, Sanders stressed the need for sustained investment.

Amid reports of clashes with Adm Sir Tony Radakin, the chief of defence staff, Sanders’ speech underscored the importance of politicians committing to increased defence spending. The Ministry of Defence released a statement clarifying that national service was not being proposed, as the British military prides itself on being a voluntary force. However, the MoD emphasized that £50bn is being invested in the military this year, and the military is seeking more promises from politicians ahead of the upcoming election.
