Arrest Made in Murder of Former Clemson Star Diondre Overton
An arrest has been made in connection with the fatal shooting of Diondre Overton, a former Clemson football player, it was announced by law enforcement officials in North Carolina.
According to a statement released by the Guilford County Sheriff’s Office, Jeremiah Diago Blanks, a 20-year-old suspect, was apprehended in Michigan. Blanks was charged with first-degree murder for the alleged killing of Overton, which took place last month during a house party in Greensboro, North Carolina, Overton’s hometown.
Blanks is being held at the Oakland County Jail in Pontiac, Michigan, while extradition proceedings to North Carolina are underway. Sheriff Danny H. Rogers of Guilford County noted that local detectives traveled to Michigan to coordinate the arrest with assistance from the U.S. Marshals Service.
The tragic incident occurred on September 7, when deputies responded to reports of disturbances from the party. Despite immediate medical intervention, Overton was pronounced dead at the crime scene. The authorities have not disclosed further information regarding Blanks’ motive or additional details surrounding the shooting.
Diondre Overton, 26, was a former receiver for the Clemson Tigers, with his tenure spanning from 2016 to 2019. Overton was instrumental in Clemson’s national championship victories following the 2016 and 2018 seasons. He finished his college football career with 52 receptions, 777 yards, and seven touchdowns.
Overton’s death was announced shortly before Clemson’s game against Appalachian State on September 10, where tributes were paid by both supporters and teammates. Clemson’s head coach, Dabo Swinney, publicly expressed his condolences, stating, “He truly was one of the sweetest, spirited kids that we’ve had come through here and, again, truly a great teammate.”
