Forrest Whitley Astros Pitcher Activation

HOUSTON, Texas — The Houston Astros announced today that right-handed pitcher Forrest Whitley has been activated from the injured list, marking a significant milestone in his turbulent career. In a corresponding move, the team optioned pitcher Nick Hernandez to Triple-A Sugar Land.

Whitley, selected 17th overall by the Astros in the 2016 MLB Draft, was once regarded as one of the top pitching prospects in baseball. However, a series of setbacks, including a 50-game suspension in 2018 for violating Minor League Baseball’s drug policy, injury issues, and a Tommy John surgery, drastically limited his playing time. In the past four years, he has pitched only 66 innings in the minors.

After finally returning to the mound in 2022, Whitley faced challenges, posting a 6.53 earned run average (ERA) over 40 innings. Last season, he moved to the bullpen and improved his performance, accumulating a 1.89 ERA with a striking 31.9% strikeout rate in Triple-A. However, a bone bruise in his left knee delayed his start to the current season. Since he is out of options, the Astros were compelled to activate him or designate him for assignment.

“It’s been a long road back, but it feels great to be activated,” Whitley said. “I’m hopeful about contributing to the team and proving my worth.”

The Astros bullpen currently showcases strengths and weaknesses, with closer and setup man standing out as reliable options. While Whitley joins the bullpen as a promising addition, he must exhibit improved control, having posted a high walk rate during his recent rehab assignment—21.1% across four appearances.

“We’re excited to have Forrest back. His talent and potential are undeniable,” said Astros manager . “With the right mindset and health, he could be a significant asset for us this season.”

In order to make room for Whitley, Hernandez heads to Triple-A without making a major league appearance this year, despite holding a career 3.34 ERA at the level. The Astros are looking to fortify their bullpen as they aim for another playoff run, and Whitley could play a crucial role if he can harness his skills effectively.

Fans eagerly await his performance on the mound, hoping it signals the beginning of a revival for the once-elite prospect. As the Astros target another deep postseason push, Whitley’s contribution could be pivotal in their efforts to secure a championship.
