The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has reported an attempted assassination targeting former U.S. President Donald Trump at his golf club in West Palm Beach, Florida. The incident occurred on a Sunday, adding to a tense election campaign period that has witnessed several dramatic events.

According to officials, U.S. Secret Service agents fired at a man who was seen brandishing an AK-style rifle with a scope. The suspect was positioned approximately 400 to 500 yards away from Trump, who was golfing at the time. Palm Beach County Sheriff Ric Bradshaw stated the individual dropped the weapon and managed to flee in an SUV. Authorities later apprehended the suspect in a neighboring county.

This act follows another assassination attempt earlier in the campaign. Roughly two months prior, Trump was shot at during a rally in Pennsylvania, where a bullet grazed his ear. The atmosphere surrounding the election remains charged, especially after U.S. President Joe Biden withdrew from the race.

In response, Trump reassured his supporters via email, affirming, “There were gunshots in my vicinity, but before rumors start spiraling out of control, I wanted to let you know, I AM SAFE AND WELL! I will NEVER SURRENDER!”

The golf course was temporarily closed to Trump during the incident. Secret Service agents had secured the area and maintained a distance of a few holes ahead of Trump’s position. A standard procedure involves agents bringing an armored vehicle onto the course to quickly shield the former president in case of an emergency.

Following these incidents, Trump returned to his Mar-a-Lago residence in Palm Beach. Officials from the White House stated that both President Biden and Vice-President Kamala Harris had been kept informed and expressed relief at Trump’s safety. Harris remarked that such violence is unacceptable in America.

Senator Lindsey Graham of South Carolina, a close ally of Trump, reported speaking with him after the ordeal, describing Trump as being in “good spirits” and affirming him as “one of the strongest people” he knows.

The law enforcement response to the suspect was swift. Martin County Sheriff William D. Snyder reported that his deputies acted immediately upon receiving an urgent “be on the lookout” alert. The vehicle in question was identified, stopped, and the driver was taken into custody. The suspect showed little emotion during the arrest and did not inquire about the reason.

Attorney General Merrick Garland is reportedly receiving periodic updates on the situation. The apprehended individual was captured near Palm City, about 45 miles from the golf course. Interstate 95 was briefly closed during the pursuit.
