Baroda and Surat Face Unhealthy Air Quality Amid Clear Skies
BARODA, Gujarat, India – On Wednesday, January 8, 2025, Baroda and Surat experienced clear skies but unhealthy air quality levels, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD). Baroda recorded a maximum temperature of 28.0°C and a minimum of 15.0°C, with an Air Quality Index (AQI) of 134, categorized as ‘Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups.’ Meanwhile, Surat saw a high of 29°C and a low of 17°C, with an AQI of 172, classified as ‘Unhealthy.’
The primary pollutant in both cities was PM2.5, tiny particles less than 2.5 micrometers in diameter, which can penetrate deep into the lungs and bloodstream. These particles originate from vehicle emissions, industrial activities, fires, and dust. Health experts warn that prolonged exposure to PM2.5 can lead to respiratory and cardiovascular issues, particularly for sensitive groups such as children, the elderly, and individuals with pre-existing conditions.
In Baroda, the IMD forecasted no rain, with sunrise at 07:19 and moonrise at 13:07. Surat also reported no rain, with sunrise at 07:18 and moonrise at 13:10. Both cities are expected to maintain clear skies throughout the day.
Authorities have advised residents to take preventive measures, including staying indoors with windows closed, using air purifiers, and avoiding outdoor exercise. Those venturing outside are encouraged to wear N95 masks to reduce exposure to harmful particles. The data was sourced from the IMD and aqicn.org, providing real-time updates on weather and air quality conditions.
As air pollution continues to be a pressing issue in urban areas, local governments are urged to implement stricter regulations on emissions and promote sustainable practices to improve air quality. Residents are encouraged to stay informed and plan their activities accordingly to minimize health risks.
