Bill Shorten, the former leader of the Labor Party and current Minister for the National Disability Insurance Scheme, has announced his retirement from politics. He will step down in February 2025 to assume the role of vice-chancellor at the University of Canberra.

Shorten made the announcement during a press conference held in Parliament House, alongside Prime Minister Anthony Albanese. He reflected on his nearly two-decade-long career in federal parliament, emphasizing his dedication to public service and the issues he championed.

Albanese praised Shorten for his hard work and commitment during his leadership of the Labor Party, noting that he had brought significant energy and ambition to the role. The Prime Minister expressed his desire for Shorten to remain in the cabinet until his departure, mentioning the ongoing efforts to reform the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS).

Shorten stated that the recent parliamentary reforms passed for the NDIS would ensure a more effective program that stays true to its original purpose. He highlighted the need to shift focus toward positive outcomes for individuals relying on the scheme.

University of Canberra chancellor, Lisa Paul, expressed her support for Shorten’s upcoming role, stating that his extensive experience with the NDIS aligns perfectly with the university’s mission to enhance accessibility in education.

As Shorten prepares for his transition, the question of his successor in the seat of Maribyrnong remains open. Albanese acknowledged the possibility of a gap in representation between Shorten’s retirement and the upcoming federal election, scheduled for May 2025.

Reflecting on his political career, Shorten did not express any regrets about his decisions, including the leadership changes within the Labor Party. He quoted famous singer Frank Sinatra, emphasizing that despite any challenges faced, he has always remained true to his convictions.
