Bob Marley’s Son Stephen Marley Honored in Wilmington Homecoming Celebration
A ceremony to honor Stephen Marley, son of Rita and Bob Marley, unfolded into a warm welcome home celebration. The acclaimed singer, born in Wilmington, returned to his roots on Wednesday, March 21, to receive a key to the city from Mayor Purzycki. The event, attended by an array of family members, friends, and supporters, took place in Wilmington, where Bob Marley had his first American residence.
The Marley family has deep ties to Delaware. Stephen Marley’s grandmother, Cedella Booker, belonging to the Malcolm family, resided on the unit block of 24th Street in Wilmington. This residence is situated across from Tatnall Street Park, now renamed One Love Park/Tatnall Playground in honor of the legendary reggae icon Bob Marley, further solidifying their connection to the city.
Stephen Marley, a recipient of eight Grammy Awards, launched his music career at a young age performing with his siblings Ziggy, Sharon, and Cedella in their band Ziggy Marley and the Melody Makers. During his brief visit to Wilmington, Marley was joined by his brother Damien before they continued their tour to Silver Spring, Maryland.
Delaware boasts a significant Caribbean population with nearly 6,000 Jamaicans and over 13,000 West Indians calling the state home. The Malcolm family, prominent in Wilmington, is actively working to promote awareness of the contributions of Caribbean individuals to Delaware, emphasizing cultural significance and impact.
As part of their efforts, the Marley family recently announced plans to establish the Jamaican Heritage and Reggae Museum. Additionally, in June, the family will host the second annual One Love Reggae Festival, a vibrant and family-friendly music event held at Glasgow Park in New Castle County, underscoring their commitment to preserving and celebrating reggae culture.
