DA Calls for Oversight on SAPS Inaction in VBS Corruption Investigation
Six years after the Democratic Alliance (DA) raised criminal charges against EFF’s Floyd Shivambu and Julius Malema for alleged corruption involving the now defunct VBS bank, the South African Police Service (SAPS) has shown no progress in the investigations, leaving the DA concerned.
The DA has decided to escalate the matter to the Police Portfolio Committee, urging Chair Ian Cameron to summon SAPS to explain the lack of advancement in the case filed in 2018 against Malema and Shivambu over the VBS scandal.
SAPS’s delay in addressing the issue has allowed serious corruption allegations against Shivambu and Malema to remain unattended, raising questions about the commitment to combating corruption in the country.
Statements from key figure Tshifhiwa Matodzi implicated Shivambu and Malema in a scheme to defraud VBS bank and exploit its clients, tarnishing their public image and raising concerns about ethical conduct in Parliament.
The DA emphasized the importance of holding public office holders accountable and stressed the need for thorough investigations into the alleged corruption at VBS to ensure justice is served.
In light of the significant implications of the VBS scandal, the DA urged the Parliament Portfolio Committee on Police to exercise oversight and address the ongoing inaction by SAPS in concluding the investigations.
