St. Louis Cardinals Trade Players

ST. LOUIS, Missouri — The St. Louis Cardinals are entering a rebuilding phase this offseason, prompting potential trades involving key veterans. Among those on the trading block are pitcher Sonny Gray, infielder Nolan Arenado, and catcher Willson Contreras.

All three players hold no-trade clauses, allowing them to veto any proposed moves. However, this hasn’t deterred the Cardinals from exploring trade options. Josh Jacobs of Redbird Rants reports that the New York Mets may be interested in acquiring Contreras.

“If there is any clubhouse that needs a shake-up right now, it’s the New York Mets,” Jacobs noted. After a disappointing season, where they fell behind the Cincinnati Reds in the Wild Card race, the Mets may seek Contreras to strengthen their lineup, particularly if slugger Pete Alonso departs via free agency.

Contreras, 31, is known for his power at the plate and could fill the void left by Alonso, should he leave. The Cardinals are expected to pursue moving Contreras to open up roster space for younger talent.

Arenado, who also has a no-trade clause and is on a lucrative contract, could face similar trade scrutiny. Despite the challenges, the Cardinals remain eager to move him before the season begins. Jacobs mentions that Arenado has expressed fondness for former teammate Albert Pujols, currently rumored to be a candidate for the Angels‘ managerial position.

With the potential for Pujols to lead an Angels team that previously showed interest in Arenado, a trade could become feasible. The Cardinals are reportedly prepared to cover part of his salary, making them more appealing trade partners.

The Cardinals are not only looking to shed contracts but also to reshape their roster ahead of a promising future. Parting ways with Contreras, Arenado, or Gray could provide much-needed financial relief and a clearer path for the organization’s younger players.

The possibility of trading these veterans raises questions about their future and the direction of the franchise. The Cardinals are facing a pivotal offseason, and how they navigate their roster changes could significantly impact the team.
