WASHINGTON, D.C. — Cardio exercise is widely recognized as essential for health, but finding the motivation to start—or restart—can be a challenge. A new illustrated guide by NPR‘s Life Kit aims to help those struggling to get back into a workout routine.

Published on January 24, 2025, the comic features insights from a cardiologist and vice president of medical affairs at Hello Heart, a cardiovascular health tracking app. The expert addresses common questions about cardio exercise and offers practical tips for incorporating more heart-pumping movement into daily life.

“You know that cardio exercise is good for your health, but it can be hard to work up the motivation to do it,” said the cardiologist. “This guide is for anyone who feels like they’re dragging their feet.”

The comic, illustrated by Life Kit editor Malaka Gharib, uses humor and relatable scenarios to break down barriers to exercise. It covers topics such as how to start small, the benefits of consistent movement, and ways to make cardio enjoyable.

The digital story was edited by Meghan Keane, with Beck Harlan serving as the visual editor. NPR’s Life Kit encourages audience engagement, inviting listeners to share their thoughts via voicemail at 202-216-9823 or email at [email protected].
