Celebrating Ben Abercrombie’s Graduation and Remarkable Journey
CAMBRIDGE, Massachusetts — Ben Abercrombie celebrated a remarkable achievement in May by graduating from Harvard University with a finance degree. This milestone came seven years after a catastrophic injury during his first game as a Harvard football player left him paralyzed.
On graduation day, approximately 60 friends and family gathered on the top floor of the tallest building in Cambridge. The event, hosted by John Schall, was not just a graduation party; it was a celebration of Ben’s inspiring comeback after enduring a life-altering injury. Ben maneuvered his wheelchair through the crowd using a tube in his mouth, demonstrating resilience as he made his way to the buffet.
The evening featured a montage celebrating Ben’s journey, showing his struggles in recovery. Clips depicted his parents, who relocated from Alabama to support him through his rehabilitation, helping him regain movement and independence. The emotional highlight was witnessing Ben’s determined spirit, attending classes independently while navigating the challenges of college life.
Tim Murphy, Ben’s former head coach, reminisced about Ben’s impressive qualities on the field. Ben’s father Marty shared a poignant narrative about his son’s battles, emphasizing that recovery is not just about regaining physical abilities, but also about making an impact. Ben’s influence has left an indelible mark on those around him.
After the montage, Ben greeted guests, expressing gratitude for their support. Speaking to a high school junior who had come to meet him, Ben said, “Thank you for coming here and saying that to me. It’s what helps me keep keeping on.”
Ben’s journey began in 2017 when he suffered a spinal injury during a game. Despite this traumatic event, he returned to Harvard two years later on a modified course load, displaying immense determination. His parents took on significant responsibilities, supporting him daily as he adapted to his new life.
The annual 3.2 for Ben road race originated as a way to support his medical expenses. It has since grown considerably, raising over a million dollars and drawing participants from multiple states. The race continues to honor Ben’s spirit, with communities rallying to support his recovery and family.
Ben recently secured a remote job with Wells Fargo as a financial manager in training, marking another step forward in his life. He remains actively involved in his recovery, utilizing adaptive technology to regain mobility and strength.
Excitingly, there’s hope on the horizon with an experimental enzyme treatment being developed by NervGen, aimed at repairing nerve injuries. Marty Abercrombie expressed optimism about participating in clinical trials that could further aid Ben’s recovery.
Despite his injury, Ben maintains a passion for football, and he has plans to support a local rival team by offering coaching insights. Reflecting on the sport that defined him, Ben stated, “It’s taught me lessons beyond the game and given me all these memories.” His dedication and tenacity continue to inspire those around him.
