Clover Recalls Gonuts Peanut Butter Due To Aflatoxin Contamination

Clover has issued a recall for 10,776 units of GoNuts Peanut Butter due to elevated levels of aflatoxin, a harmful toxin. This action follows prior recalls by well-known brands including Pick n Pay, Dischem, Wazoogles, Eat Naked, and Woolworths, all linked to aflatoxin contamination.

Consumers who have purchased Clover’s GoNuts Peanut Butter in 400g containers with specific best-before dates are urged to cease consumption and return the product for a full refund. The National Consumer Commission has highlighted the health risks associated with aflatoxin exposure, which can include symptoms like nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain.

The National Consumer Commission is actively investigating Clover for potential violations of the Consumer Protection Act in response to the recent recall of the GoNuts Peanut Butter. This probe comes in the wake of multiple peanut butter recalls within the market, prompting heightened scrutiny toward peanut product manufacturers and suppliers.

The commission has emphasized the importance of compliance with safety regulations and called on all peanut butter producers, manufacturers, and distributors to conduct thorough aflatoxin testing on their products. Non-compliance with safety protocols has raised concerns, leading to a call for swift action to protect South African consumers from potential harm.

NCC Acting Commissioner Thezi Mabuza has underscored the need for immediate recalls of non-compliant peanut butter products to safeguard consumer health. Suppliers are expected to cooperate with the commission and adhere to product recall guidelines stipulated in the Consumer Protection Act.
