Congress leader Arvinder Singh Lovely‘s decision to resign from his post as the Delhi Congress chief has sparked controversy within the party, leading to speculations about his next political move.

Following Lovely’s resignation, former Congress MLA Asif Mohammad Khan claimed that the BJP is considering fielding Lovely as their candidate for the East Delhi Lok Sabha seat, potentially replacing Harsh Malhotra.

Lovely cited the alliance with the AAP as one of the reasons for his resignation, mentioning that the Delhi Congress unit had objections to the alliance but that the party high command proceeded with it anyway.

In his resignation letter addressed to Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, Lovely expressed his disappointment with the unilateral decisions made by the AICC Delhi in-charge Deepak Babria, overriding the consensus decisions of senior Delhi unit leaders.

Notably, Lovely criticized the Congress’ North East Delhi candidate Kanhaiya Kumar for his praise of Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, who is currently in jail on charges of money laundering.

Internal tensions in the Delhi Congress further escalated with the announcement of Kanhaiya Kumar and Udit Raj as candidates for North East Delhi and North West Delhi respectively, leading to protests by local party workers.

In the 2019 elections, Lovely contested against BJP’s Gautam Gambhir and AAP’s Atishi in the East Delhi constituency but did not receive a ticket this time due to the Congress-AAP alliance.
