Brett James Country Songwriter Plane Crash

FRANKLIN, North Carolina — Country music songwriter Brett James, known for writing Carrie Underwood‘s hit “Jesus, Take the Wheel,” died in a plane crash on September 18, 2025. The crash also claimed the lives of James’ wife, Melody Carole, 59, and her daughter, Meryl Wilson, 28.

According to a preliminary report from the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), James was piloting his single-engine Cirrus SR22T plane when he approached Macon County Airport around 2:48 p.m. local time. He reported being at 6,800 feet and intended to perform a 360-degree turn to land on runway 7. That was his last transmission before the crash.

Witnesses in the area reported seeing the plane flying dangerously low while approaching the airport. The aircraft began to rock side-to-side and entered a tightening spiral before it crashed into a field near an elementary school. The NTSB noted that there were no signs of engine failure found at the crash site.

James, 57, had a prolific career in country music, penning over 500 songs for popular artists. His work earned him numerous accolades, including being a two-time ASCAP Country Songwriter of the Year and an inductee into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame.

Many artists and fans have expressed their condolences on social media, sharing memories and tributes celebrating James’ legacy. The Nashville Songwriters Association International called his loss “profound” and a representative from the American Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers highlighted his dedication to songwriters.

Just before the accident, James’ wife shared a heartfelt birthday tribute to her daughter on social media, commemorating Meryl’s 28th birthday. In a previous post, James expressed his joy during a family outing, reflecting the happiness he shared with his loved ones.
