Todd Phillips’ much-anticipated sequel, “Joker: Folie à Deux,” is gearing up for its theatrical release amid contrasting expectations for its box office performance. The 2019 film “Joker,” featuring Joaquin Phoenix in a lauded portrayal of the iconic Batman villain, emerged as a box office juggernaut, earning over $1.07 billion worldwide. The original film, with a modest budget of $55 million, became a cultural phenomenon, despite initial concerns over its dark themes, earning 11 Oscar nominations and two wins, including Best Actor for Phoenix.

“Joker: Folie à Deux,” which reintroduces Phoenix as Arthur Fleck and features Lady Gaga as Harley Quinn, is expected to garner between $50 million and $65 million in its opening weekend across 4,100 North American theaters. These figures represent a significant dip from the first “Joker” film, which debuted to $96.2 million in 2019, setting a record for October openings. The sequel’s budget, set at $200 million, adds pressure for the film to perform remarkably at the box office.

The international prospects for “Folie à Deux” appear more promising, with estimates ranging from $80 million to $85 million over the weekend. This could potentially yield a global opening of $130 million to $150 million by Sunday, indicating a strong international appeal.

Industry analysts attribute some of the tempered domestic expectations to the film’s reception at the Venice Film Festival, where it premiered. Unlike its predecessor, which garnered significant festival acclaim, the sequel received a more muted response from critics. This lack of early enthusiasm may have tempered the buzz leading into its wide release.

Phillips, alongside co-writer Scott Silver, has crafted a narrative that continues to explore the troubled psyche of Arthur Fleck, as he encounters Harley Quinn in Arkham Asylum. Despite its classification as a musical, Phillips has clarified that the film’s musical elements are primarily used to express dialogue, with Phoenix and Gaga delivering performances expected to match the film’s intense tone.

“Joker 2” faces competition from Lionsgate‘s release “White Bird,” a follow-up to “Wonder,” which targets a significantly different demographic and is projected to earn modestly over the weekend.

Overall, while “Joker: Folie à Deux” might not replicate the unexpected cultural splash of its predecessor, its blend of strong star power and thematic continuity suggests a film that will likely capture audiences’ interests globally, despite mixed critical responses.
