UK Dancer Dies of Severe Allergic Reaction to Cookie Purchased from US Supermarket Chain
A tragic incident has unfolded in New York as a promising UK dancer, Órla Baxendale, passed away due to a severe allergic reaction caused by a peanut-containing cookie purchased from the popular US supermarket chain, Stew Leonard's, in Connecticut. The 25-year-old had pursued her dream career in dancing and moved to New York to become a part of the renowned Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater in Manhattan.
According to lawyers representing Órla’s family, she tragically lost her life on January 11 from anaphylactic shock triggered by a cookie manufactured by Cookies United and sold by Stew Leonard’s. The cookie contained peanuts, despite not listing them as part of the ingredients, leading to the fatal allergic reaction.
The family’s lawyers expressed gratitude for the overwhelming support and tributes received from around the world following this unimaginable loss. They described Órla as a radiant and brave soul who had left an indelible mark on the hearts of those who knew her. The global dance community and her family, friends, and colleagues are deeply saddened by her untimely demise.
Stew Leonard’s, a supermarket chain with three locations in Connecticut, issued a recall for their Florentine Cookies, which were being sold under their brand name at stores in Danbury and Newington. The cookies were found to contain peanuts, an ingredient that had not been disclosed by the manufacturer, Cookies United.
It was revealed that Cookies United had sent emails to 11 Stew Leonard’s employees in July, notifying them of the inclusion of peanuts in the chocolate and vanilla Florentine cookies. However, the chief safety officer at Stew Leonard’s claims to have never received this notification. Additionally, the Connecticut Department of Consumer Protection discovered that the cookies also contained eggs, another undisclosed ingredient.
An updated statement from Stew Leonard’s warned that those with allergies or severe sensitivity to peanuts or eggs face a risk of serious or life-threatening reactions if they consume these products. The cookies were sold between November 6 and December 31, with a best by date of January 5.
The Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater confirmed that Órla Baxendale was an alumna of their school. They released a statement expressing deep sorrow over her passing and remembered her for her joyful spirit, boundless talent, and her contributions to the New York dance world. She had danced with numerous companies and choreographers, including her recent membership with MOMIX.
