AUSTIN, Texas — Daylight saving time (DST) ends on Sunday, November 2, 2025, at 2 a.m., when clocks will fall back one hour. This change allows those in the 48 states that observe DST to gain an extra hour of sleep.

Starting in March 2025, Americans will have to adjust their schedules for daylight saving time, which has been observed since 1918 when Congress passed the Standard Time Act. According to the Energy Policy Act of 2005, DST begins on the second Sunday in March and ends on the first Sunday in November. States can exempt themselves from observing DST, but most follow the federal guidelines.

Parents might wonder how to help their children adjust to the time change. Parenting expert Ericka Souter suggests moving children’s schedules earlier by 10 to 15 minutes each day leading up to the change. She advises controlling morning light and keeping bedroom curtains drawn to prevent early rising.

“Even with the best plan, most kids need a few days, sometimes a full week, to adjust,” Souter said in an email to ABC News. Crankiness during this time is normal and expected, she added.

The U.S. previously instituted daylight saving time during World War I to maximize daylight hours. While many states now participate, Hawaii and most of Arizona do not observe the clock change. Additionally, U.S. territories that do not participate include American Samoa, Guam, the Northern Mariana Islands, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

Health experts have raised concerns over DST, arguing it disrupts natural sleep patterns. Research links time changes to potential risks such as heart attacks and mood disturbances. Dr. Darien Sutton, an ABC News medical correspondent, recommends gradually adjusting bedtimes and increasing sunlight exposure during the day.

There has been ongoing debate over making daylight saving time permanent in the U.S. The Sunshine Protection Act was reintroduced in January 2025 to Congress but has yet to be voted on.

As the end of daylight saving time approaches, residents are reminded to set their clocks back one hour on November 2. This annual clock change will lead to darker evenings but brighter mornings for the winter months ahead.
