Delta Air Lines Faces Backlash Over Comments on Palestinian Flag Pins

Delta Air Lines has come under fire after a social media post sparked controversy regarding Palestinian flag pins worn by its employees. The incident unfolded when a user on X shared photos of Delta staff wearing Palestinian flag pins, likening them to Hamas badges and expressing discomfort.

The post, which has since been deleted, led to Delta responding from its own X account, acknowledging the user’s concerns and stating that they would also be ‘terrified’ in such a situation. This response triggered further backlash, with many condemning Delta for its stance.

The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) national deputy director, Edward Ahmed Mitchell, criticized Delta’s response as ‘reprehensible’ and called for an apology. CAIR emphasized the need to address anti-Palestinian sentiments in the workplace and educational settings.

Following the uproar, Delta issued an apology, attributing the controversial comment to a mistaken post on their social media account. The airline stated that the responsible team member has been counseled and no longer manages Delta’s social channels.

Delta clarified that the employees photographed wearing the Palestinian flag pins were in compliance with the uniform policy and continue to work for the airline. However, the company announced a new policy effective July 15, allowing only U.S. flags on uniforms as a measure to create a safe and inclusive environment.

Furthermore, the steering committee of the Delta AFA union criticized the company’s handling of the situation, pointing out a pattern of failure to support flight attendants. The union demanded a public apology, improved social media moderation, and a ban on non-consensual photography of crew members.

Amidst calls for accountability and sensitivity training, Delta’s reputation has taken a hit, with some online users calling for a boycott of the airline. The incident serves as a reminder of the complexities surrounding cultural and political symbols in corporate settings.
