Dennis Smith Jr. Dallas Mavericks

Dallas, TX – Dennis Smith Jr. has agreed to a one-year deal to return to the Dallas Mavericks, according to his agent, Daniel Hazan. This move marks a reunion with the franchise that selected him as the ninth overall pick in the 2017 NBA draft.

Smith, 27, played for the Mavericks for one and a half seasons, during which he earned All-Rookie honors after averaging 15.2 points in his first year. His performance secured him a spot on the NBA All-Rookie Team for the 2017-2018 season.

In January 2019, Smith was traded to the New York Knicks in a deal that sent Kristaps Porzingis to Dallas. Since then, he has played for multiple teams, including the Detroit Pistons, Portland Trail Blazers, Charlotte Hornets, and most recently, the Brooklyn Nets. Smith has also spent a season with Real Madrid in the Euroleague.

Smith has had fluctuating success in the league. In 326 career games, he has averaged 9.7 points, 4.2 assists, and 3.0 rebounds. Last season with the Hornets, he became known for his defensive skills, ranking second in steals per 36 minutes among players with significant playing time.

Upon his return to Dallas, Smith will aim to secure a roster spot during training camp. Currently, the Mavericks have a full roster, but with 15 players on standard contracts, including guard Brandon Williams, there may be competition for the final spot. If Smith performs well, he could earn a place in the rotation.

This move is significant for both Smith and the Mavericks, highlighting Dallas’ interest in bringing back the energetic guard who once captivated fans with his athleticism and scoring ability.
