DeWanna Bonner Makes WNBA History in First Game for Indiana Fever

Indianapolis, Indiana — DeWanna Bonner made a historic mark in her first game with the Indiana Fever on May 17, 2025. The veteran forward entered the WNBA’s season opener against the Chicago Sky needing just seven points to move into third place on the league’s all-time scoring list.
As the game approached the final minutes, Bonner had five points. Caitlin Clark, a superstar on the Fever, rallied her teammates during a timeout. “Hey, let’s get a basket for DB right now,” Clark said, mic’d up for the ABC and ESPN broadcast. “Come on, we’re getting DB into third place right now.”
Shortly after, Natasha Howard passed to Bonner as she drove to the basket. Despite a missed shot, Bonner was fouled and earned two free throws with three minutes remaining. She made the first free throw, raising her arms in celebration as she tied Tina Thompson at 7,488 career points. The crowd erupted into a standing ovation, while her teammates cheered around her.
Bonner calmly sank her second free throw, breaking the tie and securing third place with 7,489 career points. She exited the game shortly thereafter to a wave of applause, receiving hugs from her teammates as she walked down the Fever’s bench.
Currently, Tina Charles, who is still active, sits in second place with 7,696 points, while Diana Taurasi leads with 10,646 points over her 20-year career with the Phoenix Mercury.
