DNC Chair Ken Martin Defends Jewish Community and Party Values

Washington, D.C. – Ken Martin, the newly elected chair of the Democratic National Committee (DNC), addressed the Jewish community‘s significance to the party during a conference on May 2, 2025. He emphasized the need for the Democratic Party to affirm its support for the Jewish community and Israel.
“It is so important right now for our party to stand up with the Jewish community and to continue to stand up for humanity,” Martin stated, highlighting the relevance of these issues amid ongoing divisions within the party concerning Israel and antisemitism. He described the Jewish community as “really, really an important part of our coalition.”
Martin, who identifies as culturally Jewish, shared insights from his non-traditional upbringing, noting his adoptive father’s Catholic faith and his Jewish mother’s influence. “I like to say I’m a cashew,” he said, reflecting on his diverse background.
In his remarks, Martin acknowledged that recent polling indicates many Americans view the Democratic Party as the party of the elite. He urged Democrats to present a clear message that aligns with American values. “The thing that will define us right now is whether we’re willing to stand up and fight back against the extremes of this administration,” he said, indicating a desire for a unified party that includes members from various ideological backgrounds.
Martin highlighted a need for the party to expand its base to include conservative Democrats, progressives, and centrists, asserting that factionalism undermines the party’s goals. He expressed optimism about the growing political engagement among independents and those traditionally disconnected from politics.
As the party grapples with internal challenges and external pressures, Martin’s statement reaffirms a commitment to core principles, positioning the Democratic Party as a defender of marginalized communities.
