DNC Criticizes MAGA Republicans for FEMA Funding Opposition Amid Hurricane Helene
The Democratic National Committee (DNC) has sharply criticized a faction of Republicans associated with former President Donald Trump over their recent opposition to funding for the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). The criticism comes while Hurricane Helene was approaching the southeastern United States, raising concerns about disaster preparedness and response capabilities.
DNC Rapid Response Director Alex Floyd issued a statement condemning the actions of several House Republicans, whom he referred to as “Donald Trump’s cronies.” Floyd stated that these lawmakers voted against extending FEMA funding and accused them of “spouting dangerous misinformation” in the aftermath of the hurricane’s impact.
Floyd’s statement also referenced former President Trump’s record on handling natural disasters. “As president, Trump showed us how he’d respond to natural disasters: he spread reckless conspiracy theories and tried to personally withhold aid from disaster-stricken communities for his own selfish political priorities,” Floyd said. He further criticized Trump’s current agenda, known as Project 2025, claiming it would “gut funding for weather preparedness and restrict disaster response efforts.”
The DNC’s remarks highlight ongoing political tensions over emergency management funding, especially in the context of severe weather events that increasingly threaten different parts of the United States. The opposition from the accused Republican lawmakers sparks concerns among Democrats about potential risks to public safety and preparedness in the face of natural disasters.
