Doctors Strike Over Safety Demands

NEW DELHI: The Indian Medical Association (IMA) is taking a stand for the safety of doctors across the country after a tragic incident involving the brutal rape and murder of a postgraduate student at RG KAR Medical College and Hospital.

In response, the IMA has put forward five key demands aimed at improving the safety and working conditions for medical professionals. They are calling for a central law that addresses violence against doctors and healthcare facilities. They believe incorporating amendments from the Epidemic Diseases Act into the Hospital Protection Bill would strengthen existing state laws.

The IMA is also insisting that hospital security measures should be as rigorous as airport protocols. They are advocating for hospitals to be declared safe zones, equipped with mandatory security features like CCTV and trained personnel.

Another major concern highlighted is the grueling 36-hour work shifts that many doctors endure without adequate rest facilities. The IMA is calling for a thorough review of working conditions to ensure doctors have safe spaces to rest.

Additionally, the association demands a thorough investigation into the recent crime and swift justice for the victim while ensuring that those responsible for such violent acts are held accountable.

As part of their protest, the IMA has announced a 24-hour strike starting Saturday, August 17. During this time, while emergency services will remain operational, outpatient services and elective surgeries will be on hold. They are asking for public support in their fight for better safety and justice for healthcare workers.
