Dwayne Johnson Reveals Digestive Struggles in Recent Health Discussion

Los Angeles, CA — Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson shared details about his ongoing digestive issues in a recent conversation with Dr. Mark Hyman. The 53-year-old actor and former wrestler explained that he has been dealing with this health challenge for several years without finding a solution.
In a discussion on “The Mark Hyman Show,” Johnson recounted an exchange he had with Ari Emanuel, his former agent and current CEO of Endeavor, about his digestive concerns. Emanuel asked him what was wrong, and Johnson replied, “I’ve seen doctors and I can’t quite nail it. I can’t quite fix it. It’s in my digestion.”
Despite feeling good overall, Johnson expressed frustration over his inability to resolve the gut issue. Emanuel recommended Hyman, a practitioner of functional medicine, which seeks to identify the root causes of health problems rather than just treating symptoms.
During his conversation with Hyman, Johnson learned about the principles of functional medicine, which aims to address individual imbalances and underlying dysfunctions. “You said, very succinctly, ‘I’m not going to treat your symptoms. I’m going to go deeper than that and treat the root cause of what’s going on,’” Johnson said, echoing Hyman’s approach.
The treatment started in early 2024, as Johnson prepared to embark on a demanding schedule leading up to WrestleMania 40 with WWE. Hyman noted that pinpointing the issue required thorough testing, including blood panels and stool tests.
As Johnson faced a busy year, including the release of “Red One” and “Moana 2” and filming for “The Smashing Machine,” he worried about how to manage his digestive problems amidst his commitments. “I was thinking, ‘Holy s–t, how am I going to get through this with my gut issues? I’m not digesting properly,’” he recalled.
Hyman eventually identified that Johnson’s issues stemmed from taking multiple rounds of antibiotics, which disrupted his gut bacteria. He was found to be missing Akkermansia, a beneficial bacterium that protects the intestinal lining. Hyman explained, “We basically rehabbed your gut. Gave you probiotics and plant compounds—pomegranate, green tea, cranberry—to help rebuild it.”
Johnson noted that Hyman created a custom gut health shake tailored specifically for him, containing over 10 ingredients. Although he hasn’t wrestled in WWE since, Johnson’s health journey highlights the importance of addressing underlying health issues.
