Election Commission Issues Show Cause Notices to Congress and BJP Leaders Over Derogatory Remarks
The Election Commission has taken action against Congress leader Supriya Shrinate and BJP’s Dilip Ghosh for making derogatory comments towards actor Kangana Ranaut and Bengal Chief Minister. The poll panel issued show-cause notices to both leaders, citing that the remarks were ‘undignified and in bad taste’ and potentially violated the Model Code of Conduct.
Supriya Shrinate received backlash after an inappropriate post targeting Kangana Ranaut was seen on her Instagram account. In her defense, Shrinate claimed that the post was made without her knowledge and was deleted as soon as she became aware of it. However, the post had already sparked controversy.
The National Commission of Women also weighed in, expressing concerns and calling for action against Shrinate and another Congress leader, HS Ahir, for their distasteful remarks. Kangana Ranaut responded assertively, emphasizing the need to respect women’s dignity.
On the other hand, Dilip Ghosh faced scrutiny for his comments about the Bengal Chief Minister, saying, ‘Decide who your father is’. Trinamool Congress strongly criticized Ghosh’s statement, calling it crude and unacceptable.
Both Congress and BJP are now under pressure to address the issue promptly. Recognizing the potential damage to the party’s image, BJP demanded an explanation from Ghosh, who showed readiness to respond. Ghosh expressed regret if his language was deemed inappropriate.
The Election Commission’s Chief, Rajiv Kumar, had previously cautioned politicians to maintain civility in their discourse, especially during the election period. With the Lok Sabha elections approaching, the Commission’s actions signal a zero-tolerance policy towards derogatory language and personal attacks.
