Farmers’ Delhi Chalo Protest Sparking Tensions at India’s Capital Borders

Protesters clashed with Haryana Police at the Jind and Shambhu borders as thousands of farmers initiated the ‘Delhi Chalo’ protest. The protest, led by the Sanyukt Kisan Morcha, demands guaranteed Minimum Support Price (MSP) for crops. The second leg of the farmer’s protest commenced from Punjab‘s Fatehgarh Sahib towards Delhi.

Delhi, being ringed by razor wire fences and cement blocks, is currently on high alert to thwart the entry of protesters. Section 144 has been activated by Delhi police, prohibiting large assemblies and tractor trolleys. Visuals from Gazipur, Shambhu, and Tikri borders depict extensive barricades and barbed wires controlling road access.

The farmers hailing from various parts of India are determined to voice their concerns in the national capital, with more than 200 farmer organizations joining the protest. However, strict measures have been put in place by the administrations of Delhi and Haryana to impede the movement.

Heavy security deployment has been seen at various borders, and police have cautioned the farmers of strict legal actions if they attempt to breach the borders. Concrete walls and road spike barriers have been erected to prevent any unauthorized entry into Delhi.

The protest comes as an echo of the 2020 year-long protests that forced the federal government to repeal the contentious agriculture laws. The farmers are adamant on their demands for MSP and the implementation of the Swaminathan Committee recommendations.

Political leaders are weighing in on the situation, with criticism flowing towards the Modi government for the handling of the protests. Chief Justice of India, DY Chandrachud, has assured lawyers facing traffic issues amidst the protests of accommodation in court proceedings.

The farmers’ Delhi Chalo march has triggered heightened security and traffic disruptions at Delhi’s borders. As the stalemate continues, the protestors maintain their resolve in the face of resistance.
