Firefox to Discontinue Pocket and Fakespot by July 2025

Phoenix, Arizona — Firefox announced plans to phase out the Pocket app and Fakespot browser extension as part of a strategy to focus on core products. The discontinuation is set to take effect on July 1, 2025.
In a statement released on May 22, 2025, the company explained that their independence from billion-dollar backers enables them to prioritize user needs. They noted that Pocket, which allowed users to save articles for later reading, has helped millions but now needs to be refocused to align with changing online behaviors.
“As users’ everyday needs evolve alongside the web itself, we must focus our efforts on building new solutions that give you real choice and control online,” a Firefox spokesperson stated. “We are grateful to the communities that made Pocket and Fakespot meaningful, but we believe it’s time to redirect our resources.”
Fakespot was acquired in 2023 with the intention of helping users identify genuine product reviews. However, the company concluded that the service did not fit within a sustainable business model. “While the idea resonated, it didn’t fit a model we could sustain,” the spokesperson added.
In light of these changes, Firefox plans to enhance features such as vertical tabs, smart search, and other AI-powered tools to keep improving user experiences. “This shift allows us to shape the next era of the internet – more personal, more powerful, and still proudly independent,” the spokesperson said.
Firefox’s commitment to independence sets it apart in a market dominated by tech giants, reflecting their dedication to building products that truly meet user needs.
