Former England and Liverpool midfielder, Danny Murphy, has opened up about his battle with cocaine addiction after retiring from professional football in 2013.

Murphy, who had a successful career playing for clubs like Liverpool, Crewe, Tottenham, and Blackburn over two decades, transitioned into punditry for various platforms including the BBC post his retirement.

Speaking on the Ben Health Podcast, Murphy revealed the challenges he faced once the adrenaline and dopamine rushes from football were no longer part of his life.

He confessed to struggling with cocaine and weed, with cocaine eventually becoming an addiction that he felt he couldn’t do without for a period of time.

Despite initially managing his drug use, Murphy acknowledged how it gradually took hold of him, leading to a dark period in his life.

Therapy and support were crucial for Murphy in overcoming his addiction and finding a way back to a healthier lifestyle.

During his football career, Murphy made over 400 appearances, notably being a part of the Liverpool squad that achieved a memorable Uefa Cup, FA Cup, and League Cup treble in 2001.

Reflecting on his struggles, Murphy highlighted the depths of despair he experienced and the importance of seeking help, even though there is more support available now compared to before.
